A complete overview of Palbociclib for breast cancer treatment

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

Palbociclib is used in targeted biological therapy for treating locally advanced as well as secondary breast cancer. It is either prescribed alone or in combination with hormone therapy. The drug interferes with the cancer cell multiplication process and stops the further growth of tumors. Usually, Palbociclib is responsible for blocking the proteins that have a chance of becoming overactive and stimulating breast cancer cells to increase in number.

Dosage and Usage of Palbociclib

Palbociclib dosage varies from patient to patient. It mostly depends on the stage of cancer and the body’s capability to tolerate the side effects. Make sure to follow the prescribed dose regularly to avoid any complications. This drug is available in hard capsule form that needs to be swallowed with water or other liquids. You can take it with or without food, as guided by your physician.

The typical oral dosage is Palbociclib 125 mg for adults- once a day for 3 weeks continuously that is followed by a rest period of 7 days for allowing the body to adjust with it. Depending on how your body responds to the treatment, the doctor will recommend further alterations. The standard gap between two doses is recommended to be at least 24 hours. In case you miss a single dose, it is absolutely prohibited to take two Palbociclib capsules at a time. Contact your doctor under such circumstances.

The aromatase inhibitor drugs that are prescribed with this medication are required to be consumed once a day, for a period of 28 days at a stretch. However, Ibrance Palbociclib is also prescribed in combination with Fulvestrant, where the body hasn’t responded properly to previous treatments or for patients who have had hormone therapy. It is given in two injections for the first 3 doses every 2 weeks. As the treatment progresses, the dose is reduced to only one injection a month.

Precautionary Measures

  • Make sure to tell your doctor the current medicines that you’re using. Otherwise, it can cause an unhealthy reaction in the body and even affect the treatment.

  • Patients with interstitial lung diseases like pneumonitis need to use this medicine with caution because it can cause breathing troubles and make the condition worse.

  • Infertility issues are associated with this medication. It can also harm the unborn fetus. If you have finished therapy, wait for at least 3 months before trying to get pregnant.

  • Avoid coming in contact with people who have infections because Palbace reduces the number of WBC in your body, thus making you prone to catching infections.

  • If you vomit after taking medicine, do not take another one. Wait until the time of your next dose and continue regularly.

  • Prescriptive or non-prescriptive vitamin supplements must also be avoided during this period.
