All about Botulinum toxin or Botox

Produced by the bacterium Clostridium and similar other species, Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein that is used for treating certain types of eye disorders like strabismus, blepharospasm, cervical dystonia, and torticollis. In some cases, Botulinum toxin is also prescribed for the reduction of the cosmetic appearance of wrinkles.

How to take Botulinum toxin? Usage and Dosage

This medication is given as an injection by an experienced professional intramuscularly. Since it is also used for treating migraines, sometimes it is also injected into the muscles of the head and neck. If you are getting treated by this drug for excessive sweating, the drug will be given to you intradermally.

Depending on the extent of your condition, the doctor will specify the dose. It can be modified according to your body’s response to therapy. Children’s doses are usually decided by analyzing their body weight. The treatment has to be continued until the condition is improved. It usually works by blocking nerve activity in the muscles. Most patients start noticing changes in about 2 weeks, while for some, it takes 3-6 months.

The maximum dose that can be administered is Botox 200 unit.
